CALCIUM ALGINATE DRESSING

The AlgiHeal™ Alginate Dressing is a natural dressing derived from seaweed fibers, designed for moderately to heavily exuding wounds.

Key Features:

  • High Absorbency: Capable of absorbing up to 20 times its weight, maintaining a moist wound environment.
  • Gel Formation: Absorbs wound exudates to form a gel-like covering, which
supports the development of granulation tissue and promotes effective
    wound healing.
  • Non-Adherent: The gel surface prevents sticking to the wound bed, ensuring painless removal.

Mechanism of Action:

AlgiHeal™ interacts with wound exudate through an ion-exchange process that transforms the dressing fibers into a soft calcium-sodium alginate gel, allowing it to gently conform to the wound bed. The release of calcium ions helps support the body’s natural clotting process and may assist in reducing bleeding, while the gel creates a moist, protective, non-adherent environment that promotes patient comfort and supports healing.

Indications:

AlgiHeal™ Alginate Dressing is intended for the management of wounds, including:

  • Moderate to heavily draining wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Venous/arterial leg ulcers
  • Post-surgical wounds
  • Donor sites

Contraindications:

  • Do not use on infected wounds
  • Wounds requiring surgical intervention to achieve hemostasis
  • Do not apply to dry wounds, as the dressing requires adequate exudate to function effectively

Instructions for Use:

1. Clean the wound with sterile saline water and dry surrounding skin gently.

2. Select the appropriate size of the dressing to cover the wound adequately.

3. Apply the dressing to the wound, without overlap onto the surrounding skin. Adopt alginate rope to cavity wounds.

4. Cover and secure dressing (non-adhesive) with a non-occlusive secondary dressing.

5. Dressing change will depend on patient condition and the level of exudates. Initially it may be necessary to change dressing every 24 hours or when saturated.
